POSTCARDSDOWNLOAD POSTCARDSWriting letters to your elected representatives to let them know where you stand on an issue and what you want them to do about it is one of the easiest ways to make your voice heard and influence government policy. With the Internet, it's easier than ever to find out who your member of Congress and Senators are, as well as how to contact them. While it might not seem like much, elected representatives pay attention to letters from their constituents. Keep your letters simple and limited to one subject. Don't know who your Congressperson or Senator is? Go to the House of Representatives web site, www.house.gov, and look up your Congressperson by zip code. You can look up your Senators by state on the US Senate web site, www.senate.gov. Most Congresspeople and US Senators have forms on their web sites where you can write a letter and send it with a click of your mouse. TORTURE:Dear Sir/Madam: As a citizen of the United States, I vigorously protest the use of torture in the name of national security or for any other reason or pretext. The use of torture is antithetical to our nation's cherished ideals. U.S.-sponsored torture clearly encourages similar mistreatment against American troops should they be captured and spreads hatred against American citizens. People all over the world are calling for the closure of the Guant‡namo Bay detention facility because it is a torture camp. How much more evidence does anyone need that the torture of detainees under U.S. control is not an aberration, but rather a policy of our government's intelligence agencies? The Congress put aside partisan political interests to agree on a new law that clearly prohibits the use of cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment of detainees. However, the president issued a signing statement suggesting he is bound by the law only if it does not interfere with his authority as commander in chief to protect the United States from further terrorist attacks. The president isn't getting the message, no matter how often it is repeated. The use of torture is un-American and must be stopped. Sincerely, HEALTH CARE:Dear Sir/Madam: Adequate food, shelter, and health care are not commodities to be bought and sold; they are human rights. Human rights are routinely ignored by dictatorships around the world, and, it would seem, here in the United States as well. Universal health care does not mean sub-standard or rationed medical coverage, it means affordable, quality medical care for all Americans instead of expensive, inconsistent medical care for some Americans. Just as publicly funded education is offered to all Americans, a publicly financed health care program could be made available to ensure that everyone has access to the same basic care if there was any political will to make it so. There is one reason, and one reason only, that we do not have universal health care in the United States: insurance companies make too much money denying care to those who need it while paying off politicians in the form of "campaign contributions" so that they can continue raking in profits at the expense of America's health. America's health care "system" is a disgrace. Those who take a leadership role making universal health care a reality will never have to worry about getting re-elected when two-thirds of Americans want universal health care. I urge you to find the moral courage to tackle one of the greatest and most solvable political issues of our time. Sincerely, ENVIRONMENT:Dear Sir/Madam: All of us should be deeply concerned about global climate change. Melting glaciers and Arctic sea ice, steadily rising and warming oceans, droughts, heat waves, stronger hurricanes, floods, unstable weather patterns and the spread of disease are just some of the devastating effects that we will have to deal with. There is overwhelming agreement in the scientific community that we must act quickly to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that are causing this climate instability. I am urging you to support legislation that includes: - Ratification of the Kyoto Protocol, which has already been signed by 162 countries - The withdrawal of federal subsidies, currently estimated at around $25 billion a year, from coal, oil and natural gas development and the re-allocation of those funds into clean and sustainable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydropower technologies. - Genuine leadership for a worldwide transition away from fossil fuels to clean energy technologies - Promotion of a carbon tax, NOT cap & trade programs Climate change is not about warmer weather; it's about changing life as we know it on this planet in ways that may not be survivable if we do nothing. Americans are the greatest emitters of greenhouse gases and have done the least to address the problem. This must change, now! Our response to this crisis is how we will be judged by future generations, and I for one would like history to judge us favorably, so that subsequent generations can continue to thrive. Sincerely, CONGRESSIONAL SCORECARDSOne way to find out where your representatives stand on an issue is to use a Congressional Scorecard. Many organizations compile these useful tools. Here are just a few.
